Patients come from far and wide to be treated in the ships’ operating theatres.

This interview was the stimulus for the group to organise a fund-raising event for Mercy Ships at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, St Michael’s Road, South Ham, Basingstoke at 7.30 pm on 21st May, and they are hoping to attract a good number of people.

The entry fee is deliberately set low (£2.50 - and includes tea/coffee/soft drinks and cake) in the hope that some people will also give donations. Dr Thomson will give an illustrated talk, with a short video, and there will be a display and a raffle, for which they are gathering some unusual prizes.
COPYRIGHT © of Radio Basingstoke. 25 Basingfield Close, Old Basing, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England RG24 7BG

Win two pairs of full adult weekend tickets to Blissfields!

Blissfields Festival 2008

Winner
Best Small Festival
2007 Festival Awards

Top 9 Festivals of 2008
The Sunday Times

Top 20 Small Festivals of 2008
The Observer

FRIDAY 4TH JULY

THE WONDER STUFF
NOISETTES
MAPS
CHRIS T-T
OX.EAGLE.LION.MAN
SUBSOURCE
ROBOTS IN DISGUISE
LETHAL BIZZLE
LAZY HABITS
JOHNNY FLYNN AND THE SUSSEX WIT
ROSIE ODDIE AND THE ODDSQUAD

SATURDAY 5TH JULY

THE WHIPINFADELS
PETE AND THE PIRATES
IMPERIAL LEISURE
NOAH AND THE WHALE
JIM BOB
SUBGIANT
THE WALLBIRDS
CAPTAIN PHOENIX
THE ALL NEW ADVENTURES OF US
TALK TAXIS - SUBLIMINAL GIRLS
MUMFORD AND SONS - DAVE HOUSE

SUNDAY 6TH JULY

RONI SIZE REPRAZENT
THE RUMBLE STRIPS
SIXNATIONSTATE
SOWETO KINCH
THE PAN I AM
PEGGY SUE AND THE PIRATES
MONTY AND THE BUTCHERS
RSMA WINNER
BEANS ON TOAST
BLISSKRIEG - THE BRUT CHORUS

DAY TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE

FOR TICKETS, PODCAST AND FULL LINE UP GO TO
WWW.BLISSFIELDS.CO.UK

DAY TICKETS NOW AVAILABLE
FOR TICKETS, PODCAST AND FULL LINE UP GO TO WWW.BLISSFIELDS.CO.UK

Britain’s favourite small festival announced the release of day tickets to coincide with the addition of new artists. The Mercury nominated sonic experiment Maps will join advancing new bands Noah and the Whale, Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit and the winner of this years’ yet titled Red Stripe Music Award.

This makes Blissfields 2008 truly the best year in its history and easily one of the most exciting small festivals in the country, offering the paramount balance of established names in music alongside the apex of emerging acts, playing to a crowd of astonishingly just 5,000 ticket holders. With the announcement of the daily bill, single day tickets are now available from www.blissfields.co.uk priced at just £30.00 / £35.00.

This year will also see a new addition to the Blissfields carnival; a mass birthday party. Join in on the biggest and most eccentric birthday party you’ll ever have where anybody celebrating their day over the weekend will get the chance to request songs and receive an essential birthday party pack while bands sing happy birthday to you. Even if it’s not your birthday, the atmosphere will be so electric you’ll feel as though it is.

From its launch in 2001 at the fields of founders Paul and Mel Bliss, Blissfields has captured the imagination of its patrons, growing each year until its climactic win at the 2007 UK Festival Awards where it bagged Best Small Festival as well as appearing on The Times’ Festivals of the Year list, also making their Top 5 Indie Festivals of 2008 along with the Observer’s top 20 festivals for 2008.

This may be the biggest year in its history but by no means has that quintessential magic gone, Blissfields 8 being the same enchanting boutique of past years with a bill that resplendently stamps it out in the summer calendar.

But the best news of all - you can win one of two pairs of full adult weekend tickets with your winning radio station, Radio Basingstoke dotcom. This includes a full promotion package for new CD releases."

Artists wishing to showcase their work or to discuss reasonably priced promotional packages can submit details by e-mail to lee@radiobasingstoke.com

Asked if he was confident of the future of Internet radio, Williams said: “A recent report claimed that internet radio has hit the mainstream. More than 8 million people in the UK listen to web-based radio services every week and nearly 2 million download podcasts on a weekly basis, according to a survey that suggests internet radio has hit the mainstream.”

Commissioned by the industry's audience research body Rajar, the Ipsos Mori survey last autumn found that more than 12 million people have listened to the radio online and 8.1 million listen every week either through live streaming or "listen again" services.

Ipsos Mori found that 75% of users do not listen to less live radio as a result of listening again online, with 50% tuning into new shows as a result.

For Radio Basingstoke, this is good news. Williams said: “This survey proves what we in the radio industry already knew! We are looking forward to the forthcoming launch of Radio Basingstoke on 1st May and this news is very positive for us.”

Tasked more about the use of “community” in their mission statement, Williams explained that two local schools, Bishop Challoner RC School and Costello Technology College, are working on weekly shows produced by groups of students. In addition, local presenters will be featured and there will be extensive “what’s on” coverage, through the website and on-air programming. Further, local job opportunities will be featured to help jobseekers.

There are also opportunities for the general public to become involved. These range from being able to text requests to the station (0787 401 6433) through to volunteering to master their new MySpace presence (www.myspace.com/radiobasingstoke). In particular, the station will heavily feature news of what is happening in the local community so anyone with an upcoming event is asked to e-mail full details to events@radiobasingstoke.com.

For a radio station for north Hampshire, the name Radio Basingstoke was an obvious choice. Williams discloses though that it was actually a close run thing with “Amazingstoke” until it was found that an enterprising author has already registered amazingstoke dotcom. However, he was happy for the station to adopt it as part of their logo which will soon be displayed prominently around the district.

Radio Basingstoke will be found on http://www.radiobasingstoke.com/ through your PC, internet radio and many popular mobile phones.

ENDS

Note to Editors:

“Internet radio hits the mainstream” reported in guardian.co.uk on Monday January 28 2008.

The MySpace site for the radio station is www.myspace.com/radiobasingstoke

COPYRIGHT © of Radio Basingstoke. 25 Basingfield Close, Old Basing, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England RG24 7BG

Gissa job!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5190498130011749906" style="DISPLAY: block; Only 8% of those surveyed said they listened to less radio because of the availability of podcasts. Of the 4.3 million who have downloaded podcasts, around 1.87 million people listen to at least one podcast each week. Two-thirds of podcast listeners subscribe to their favourite shows through iTunes, with nearly half tuning in during the evening. Of these, 80% listen through their computers and 61% copy the podcasts to their MP3 players.

Music and comedy are the most popular genres, with each user subscribing to more than three podcasts, on average, and listening to 53 minutes each week.

"This survey is very much a toe in the water," said the Rajar research director, Paul Kennedy. "Although we already knew that listen again, personalised online radio and podcasting had many advocates, we knew nothing of their standing in the mainstream.

For Radio Basingstoke, this is good news. Station Manager Lee Williams (pictured above with the station's PR and Communications Director, John Hicks) said: “This survey proves what we in the radio industry already knew! We are looking forward to the forthcoming launch of Radio Basingstoke on 1st March and this news is very positive for us.”

COPYRIGHT © of Radio Basingstoke. 25 Basingfield Close, Old Basing, Basingstoke, Hampshire, England RG24 7BG

North Hampshire performance artists have new opportunities!

The launch of Radio Basingstoke gives north Hampshire bands and artists a new opportunity to showcase their work.

They have the chance of having a half-hour programme dedicated to their work on a show hosted by Radio Basingstoke's Station Manager, Lee Williams. In modern business-speak, what is our Mission Statement?

Well, we will develop this over the coming months, maybe years. But what is our starting point?

We want to provide 24/7 music with an opportunity for local live performance artists to showcase their work. Programmes should have no drivel - no presenter self-promotion. There should be opportunities for all genres of music to be featured.

Putting this into a crisp phrase or two might be difficult but if you have suggestions then please e-mail our PR guru, John Hicks of Headline Promotions, Press &
