Mercy Ships and Africa

Recently BASINGSTOKE TALKING HISTORY (part of the Basingstoke Archaeological & Historical Society) recorded an interview with Dr Keith Thomson, consultant anaesthetist at North Hampshire Hospitals Trust.

He told them that he has gone out 19 times to perform anaesthetics on the Mercy Ships, which anchor in African ports. Patients come from far and wide to be treated in the ships’ operating theatres.

This interview was the stimulus for the group to organise a fund-raising event for Mercy Ships at St Joseph’s Catholic Church, St Michael’s Road, South Ham, Basingstoke at 7.30 pm on 21st May, and they are hoping to attract a good number of people.

The entry fee is deliberately set low (£2.50 - and includes tea/coffee/soft drinks and cake) in the hope that some people will also give donations. Dr Thomson will give an illustrated talk, with a short video, and there will be a display and a raffle, for which they are gathering some unusual prizes.
